Navigating the Unknown: Insights from a Year of Turmoil

The day after the death of a US-Turkish activist in the West Bank, a Palestinian territory under Israeli occupation since 1967 where violence has escalated since the outbreak of war in the Gaza Strip, her family accused the Israeli army of shooting and killing her. and demanded an “independent investigation”.

The armed conflict, triggered by an unprecedented incursion by Hamas’s military arm into southern Israel on October 7, 2023, has claimed tens of thousands of lives in the small coastal enclave, home to 2.4 million residents, and caused humanitarian and sanitary disaster.

“Eleven months… Enough. No one can take this any longer. Humanity must win. Cease fire now,” the commissioner-general of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), Philippe Lazzarini, said via X.

Despite months of efforts by mediators—Qatar, Egypt, the United States—and pressure to reach an agreement and release the hostages, the warring sides remain rigid and blame each other for the failure of indirect negotiations.

During the night and yesterday morning, repeated Israeli strikes, from the air and with artillery, rattled the largely flattened Palestinian enclave, AFP journalists on the ground found.

According to eyewitnesses and emergency workers, at least 17 Palestinians, including women and children, died, mainly in Jabalia and Gaza City.

Civil protection said at least three people were killed and more than 20 others were injured in Gaza City in an airstrike on a school compound that has been turned into a shelter for internally displaced people. The Israeli army, for its part, hit a Hamas command center.

In Jabalia, a tent set up at the Halima al Saadiyya school, which has also been turned into a shelter for displaced people, was hit by a rocket.

“We were sleeping when suddenly a rocket fell on us. We woke up terrified. We found witnesses, among them women and children,” said Ahmed Abd Rabu, who has taken refuge there.

Israel’s political and military leadership vows to wipe out Hamas, which seized power in the Gaza Strip in 2007 and is designated a terrorist organization by Israel, the US and the EU.

The raid by Hamas’ military arm into southern Israeli territory on October 7, triggering the war, left 1,205 people dead on the Israeli side, most of them civilians, according to an AFP tally based on official data. . Of the 251 people abducted that day, 97 remain hostages of the Palestinian movement militants, however 33 of them have been declared dead by the Israeli army.

Thousands of people demonstrated for another Saturday night yesterday in Israel, especially in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, demanding that a deal be struck to allow the hostages.

The protesters, including freed former hostages and relatives of hostages, chanted anti-government slogans.

Wide-scale Israeli military retaliatory operations have so far claimed the lives of at least 40,939 people in the Gaza Strip, according to the latest tally from Hamas’ health ministry. According to the UN, most of the victims were women and children.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan decided yesterday that “the only measure” that can stop the “terrorism of the Israeli state” is the creation of an “alliance of Islamic countries”.

Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz was quick to respond in a scathing way: Mr. Erdogan continues to “plunge the Turkish people into the fire of hatred and violence for the benefit of his friends in Hamas,” he blasted.

Negotiations have run into disagreements in recent weeks over several issues: notably control of the so-called Philadelphia Corridor, a narrow zone along the Gaza Strip’s border with Egypt, as well as the number of Palestinian prisoners to be released by Israel in in exchange for the hostages and the right of the Israeli authorities to veto specific names.

CIA Director Bill Burns said he was working “hard” with Qatari and Egyptian negotiators to define the framework of the deal. “We will make a proposal, more detailed, I hope, in the coming days,” he said.

In the occupied West Bank, Eisenur Ezge Eigi, 26, was killed yesterday Friday during a demonstration in Beita against the expansion of Israeli settlements, which are considered illegal under international law. Washington spoke of a “tragic” death, while Ankara condemned the “barbaric” intervention of Israeli forces and her “murder”.

Her family spoke of a video that shows, according to her, that the bullet that hit the young woman in the head “came from an Israeli army sniper”.

The Israeli military acknowledged that its members in the sector “retaliated by opening fire against (…) a rioter who threw stones at (them) and made a threat” to their safety, adding that it was “investigating” reports that “a foreigner was killed due to fire in region”.

On the so-called northern front, the practically daily exchanges of fire, since the day after the outbreak of the war in the Gaza Strip, between the Lebanese Hezbollah and the Israeli armed forces also continue.

Lebanon’s health ministry announced yesterday that three people were killed and two others were wounded in an Israeli attack on a civil protection group trying to put out fires in the southern part of the country.

Hezbollah, an Iranian-backed movement allied with Hamas, announced in the early hours of the morning that it had fired a barrage of rockets at the northern Israeli town of Kiryat Shimona in retaliation.

Earlier, the Shiite movement claimed responsibility for other attacks in northern Israel, while the Israeli military said it had carried out some intercepts and hit “Hezbollah military infrastructure and a rocket launch pad” in Kabriha and other areas of southern Lebanon.
