“A survey conducted by Apjapi in early February 2024 showed that 77% of domestic flight service users considered our ticket prices to be still reasonable,” said aviation observer Alvin Lie when contacted, Sunday (8/9).
The 77% figure is a combination of respondents’ assessments that said the price of plane tickets was reasonable (59.8%), the price of plane tickets was cheap (7%), very cheap (0.2%) and respondents who said they did not know whether plane tickets were expensive (10%). Meanwhile, 21.5% of respondents considered plane tickets expensive and 1.5% of respondents considered plane tickets very expensive.
He said the survey was conducted at five airports, namely Soekarno-Hatta Airport, Jakarta; Kualanamu International Airport, North Sumatra; Juanda International Airport, East Java; I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport, Bali; and Sultan Hasanuddin International Airport, South Sulawesi.
The survey was conducted using a direct or face-to-face interview method with 7,414 respondents, all of whom were boarding pass holders. “So it’s not a drop-off or pick-up. The survey was conducted for seven consecutive days,” Alvin explained.
He added, 91% of respondents in the survey did not know that in the ticket price paid there was an element of PJP2U (Aircraft Passenger Service Charge). That is the Airport Levy or Passenger Service Charge.

“That is what is usually mistakenly called Airport Tax. This PJP2U goes to the airport management, not to the airlines,” explained Alvin.
From the survey, it was found that 90.9% of respondents did not know that the plane tickets they purchased contained elements of PJP2U and Jasa Raharja Mandatory Contribution (IWJR). Meanwhile, only 9.1% of respondents knew about it.
In addition, domestic ticket prices in Indonesia are subject to Value Added Tax (VAT) of 11%. While international flight tickets are not subject to VAT.
“So expensive or cheap is relative to purchasing power. What is often complained about as expensive are flights to and from small airports served by propeller planes such as ATR. That type of plane is indeed expensive to operate and maintain. Much more expensive than jet planes,” said Alvin. (Z-9)
