Tonight, the drama-comedy “Closer” premieres at Kulturhuset Stadsteatern. In the play, she plays Alice – a former stripper who is drawn into a messy square drama about love, sex, lies and loneliness.
– So I don’t understand who she is, says Alba August in the box behind the stage where she will soon meet the rep audience.
– She lies in every scene, puts on different masks and plays a game all the time. But now I’ve sort of landed in the fact that she’s really only telling the truth. She is 100 percent honest and clean. She just wants to be loved and she wants to experience true love.
The play was written by Patrick Marber for the British National Stage in 1997. It has also been made into a Hollywood film, where Alice is played by Natalie Portman.
When the story is now staged in Stockholm, it has received an addition – music by Alba August.

She was keen to mix art forms, she says, to combine her artistry with theatre. And after a meeting with director Sunil Munshi, it became clear that she would both play one of the roles and write music for her character.
The EP “Alice” with three songs is released at the same time as the premiere.
– It’s an epic about love. It’s sort of the same theme based on Alice, where one of the songs is the main track in the show.
The Alice songs also became an introduction to singing in Swedish, which she had not done before.
– I really love Swedish. It has felt closer to the heart somehow now that I have sung these songs. Maybe a little less like me going into my artist character. It becomes a little more me, which makes it more revealing, she says.
“The mother was working”
There is a lot going on in life right now. Alba August is expecting a child together with love, star producer Pontus Winnberg.
– I felt pissed at the beginning and kind of wanted to end my life, but now I feel fine. You’re kind of tired and stressed, but it’s really no different from before. But it’s fun! It’s somehow nice to let go of control and just go along.
Playing theater pregnant is no problem.
– The character is not pregnant and I forget about it as soon as we start playing.
How is life then affected do you think?
– It is impossible to say how this will change. The mother worked, after all, had three children and the worst career when we were small. It’s very inspiring and I haven’t seen many examples where it hasn’t worked.
