United States (US) Secretary of State Antony Blinken plans to visit the UK for two days starting Monday (9/9).
Blinken’s visit to London will be the highest-ranking US official since Labour won the UK general election in July.
State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said Blinken would open a U.S.-UK Strategic Dialogue, with discussions on the situation in Gaza and the Middle East high on the agenda after Britain suspended 30 of its 350 arms export licenses to Israel.
Blinken will also discuss issues including Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the AUKUS defense pact.
“He will discuss Asia and the Middle East and our collective efforts to support Ukraine,” Miller said in a statement.
The White House previously announced that British Prime Minister Keir Starmer would visit the US next Friday.

It was his second trip to Washington since his election. He met President Joe Biden at the White House on July 10, days after taking office. At the time, Starmer was attending a NATO summit in Washington.
The UK and US have worked together on most global issues, and Biden’s Democratic Party has historically been seen as closer to Labour than the Conservatives.
But Starmer has taken a tougher line on Israel since taking office, his government announcing the suspension of some arms deliveries, citing the risk that the weapons could be used to violate humanitarian law.

The Labour government has also dropped plans by its Conservative predecessor to challenge the international criminal court’s right to seek the arrest of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
The US is not a member of the international tribunal and opposes efforts to target Netanyahu, arguing that Israel has its own accountability system.
But the US as Israel’s main arms supplier, did not think about the decision to suspend the weapons. They considered that Britain had its own process for making assessments and considerations (Guardian/Z-6)
