Navigating Africa’s Position on the Global Stage: Challenges and Partnerships in 2024

We must face the facts. Just like the current year of which we are experiencing the last moments, the one that is on the horizon will bring its share of challenges that Africa will once again have to take up to assert its position on the international stage. Prominent among these are its relations with other parts of the world, more precisely with the dominant powers.

In recent years they have multiplied initiatives towards the continent expressing their desire to establish partnerships with States oriented towards the development of several sectors: trade, agriculture, environment, digital, communication, energy, health, education, strengthening of institutions democracy, local development and many others.

In all these areas, as in others not mentioned above, the European Union, the United States of America, China, Russia, India, Brazil, Turkey, Japan, the countries of the Gulf each have expertise that they intend to use to gain the trust of governments and civil societies on the continent. At the same time, this “rush” towards Africa exacerbates tensions between competitors.

A particular power has signed with a particular African country to counter the influence of a rival, all accompanied by a narrative that leaves some observers of the continental scene perplexed. The fear in this ongoing race for influence is that instead of contributing to the development of our States, these partners are more concerned with nipping in the bud the successful initiatives of their rivals.

Very often these approaches are characterized by all kinds of pressure exerted on the heads of public and private institutions, when not open threats to cut aid. Yes, 2024 is here, the wheel of history will not stop turning but Africa has everything to gain by working to consolidate its independence and by acting as a bloc capable of defending its interests before external partners. whose operating methods she has known for a long time.
