Varicose veins are a relatively common problem that affects women more frequently, but it can also occur in men. To give a simple definition, they are veins that swell and become highly visible through the skin. They occur mainly on the legs, although they can appear anywhere on the body.
According to the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute of the United States (Nhlb), this health condition is characterized by causing the venous walls and valves to weaken or even become damaged.
“Veins have one-way valves inside them that open and close to keep blood flowing to the heart. Weakened or damaged valves or walls in veins can cause blood to pool and may even cause back flow. That’s called reflux. The veins can become enlarged and deformed, and that causes varicose veins to appear”, explains the Nhlb.
Among other symptoms, that health institution cited the appearance of one or more veins that look bulging and bluish under the skin, swelling, a feeling of heaviness and pain in the legs, itching in the veins and night cramps.
“Sometimes varicose veins can limit activities. Symptoms may worsen when sitting or standing for long periods, and may improve when lying down or keeping your legs elevated.
Although it is a condition that generally does not have serious consequences for the quality of life of patients, the truth is that it is always important to consult a doctor.
MedlinePlus, the virtual encyclopedia of the United States National Library of Medicine, warns that in some settings it is very important that patients seek medical services when they have varicose veins.
In turn, that medical source referred to some measures that can be used to alleviate the symptoms.
“Compression stockings help with swelling in the legs. These stockings gently squeeze the legs to make the blood rise. Your health care provider will help you find where to buy them and how to use them,” notes MedlinePlus.
And he added that physical activity is key. However, he recommends that some gentle exercises be implemented to strengthen the muscles and help the blood circulate well in the legs.
“Stand on a step above the metatarsal region. Keep your heels on the edge of the step. Stand on your toes to lift your heels up, then drop them back under the step. Stretch the calf. Do 20 to 40 repetitions of this stretch”, details MedlinePlus.
He also recommends lying on your back and then moving your legs as if you were riding a bicycle.
Likewise, he recommends other exercises that should be done gently, such as swimming and walking for more than 30 minutes.
Finally, he points out that there are some practices that should be avoided to maintain good circulation health. “Don’t sit or stand for long periods of time. When you sit or stand, flex and straighten your legs every couple of minutes to keep the blood in your legs flowing back to your heart. “Watch out for skin ulcers on the leg, especially around the ankles. Treat ulcers right away to prevent infection,” he adds.
