Alvarado is one of the nearly 100 inhabitants of the Community Pachakutik, which are dedicated to the sale of natural products that they extract from the depths of the jungle. Pachakutik is a community in the Cotundo parish, Archidona canton in the province of Napo. It is in the middle of the El Hollín and Chalúa rivers on the road that leads to The Coca. The inhabitants are Amazonian Kichwas and know the secrets of the mountain.

Just in the San Luis neighborhoodwhere José lives, there are around 48 families and most of them take advantage of the goodness of their lands to extract medicinal plants and sell them to travelers.
In José’s ‘laboratory’ you can see cinnamon sticks, sarsaparilla, Hungurahua and Sandi oil, which are attributed with optimal properties to cure ulcers, gastritis, cholesterol and even baldness. There are also cat’s claws, musuhango, dragon’s blood, natural turmeric, shell, sucker, guayusa and a great variety of medicinal plants.

José Alvarado stressed that they take great care of the jungle and take advantage of the trees that are already mature to get the medicine.
