Außenminister Péter Szijjártó auf NATO-Tagung
Written by Rainer Ackermann
“Hungary is a proud and reliable member of NATO, the strongest defense alliance in the world,” said Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó in Brussels, where he took part in a ceremony marking 75 years of NATO.
Hungary is ready to continue contributing to the security of the Euro-Atlantic community in the future. NATO membership, which was achieved 25 years ago in 1999, crowned the longing for freedom and the fight for it that generations of Hungarians had to lead. Today the country belongs “ once more to a community of free and sovereign nations,” from which Hungary was excluded for forty years due to communist oppression, said Szijjártó.
Yes to Klaus Johannis, no to Mark Rutte
On the question of Jens Stoltenberg’s successor, Hungary supports the candidacy of Romanian President Klaus Johannis for the position of NATO Secretary General. “In the history of NATO, the member states of Central Eastern Europe have never had a Secretary General.
“It would now be time, especially since the biggest security threat today comes from the East,” said Péter Szijjártó, justifying the initiative. From the outset, Hungary spoke out in favor of strengthening the eastern flank of the defense alliance and would find it only logical if this was now also reflected in the person of the Secretary General.
The Foreign Minister explained why it was not appropriate for Budapest to support the Dutchman Mark Rutte, who was favored by a “visible” majority. “As a defense alliance, NATO requires the highest level of trust in its leaders. We cannot put our trust in a man who, as Prime Minister, wanted to bring Hungary to its knees.”
Hungary in the NATO camp outsiders
As far as the Ukraine war is concerned, Szijjártó sees the Hungarian peace position in a clear outsider position. A colleague stated clearly that he would reject any peace because it had to be regarding winning the war. “This war psychosis is typical in most NATO countries today. “It’s always regarding more weapons for Ukraine,” complained the Hungarian chief diplomat.
The member states would have increasing difficulties because their weapons depots have been emptied. Hungary protects e.g. B. the airspace of Slovakia together with the Czech Republic because it handed over all combat aircraft to Ukraine and the arrival of the additional order is delayed.
“NATO is a defense alliance.
Hungary will resist all attempts
to form an attack alliance out of it.”

It is a blatant misjudgment that the arms deliveries would help Ukraine achieve its war goals. “How many times have we heard of an impending turning point on the battlefield? But none of this happened!” Hungary therefore rejects any attempt to enhance NATO’s role, for example in coordinating arms deliveries to Ukraine or training soldiers.
