After Guido Crosetto, Antonio Tajani also does not hide his disappointment with the NATO leaders. “The figure of a NATO Special Representative for the South was strongly desired by Italy, which has made a great effort, and yet the outgoing Secretary General of NATO Stoltenberg has chosen one of his deputies, the Spaniard Colomina. The position was entrusted without even consulting us”, the words of the Foreign Minister in a hearing at the joint Foreign Affairs Committee of the Chamber and Foreign Affairs and Defense of the Senate.

“He did not wait for our proposals. Legitimately, formally we cannot say anything, but politically it is not a positive way to proceed, it is a somewhat original way”, Tajani reported in response to the deputies and senators who asked if there was an agreement regarding this nomination. “No agreement, everything was done at the last minute, quickly. We were disappointed by this choice, also because of the capital of credibility and balance that our country enjoys in the region and the same cannot be said of other allies”, commented the head of Italian diplomacy. Specifying that this is the envoy of the outgoing Secretary General, Tajani specified that the next one, Mark Rutte, could also decide to nominate another, hoping for a “choice that is also more attentive to the requests and commitment of Italy”.
