The leaders of NATO countries are meeting in Lithuania to discuss the most important challenges for the alliance, the most prominent of which is undoubtedly the Ukraine crisis.
The American move to provide Kiev with cluster bombs raised divisions between supporters and opponents, and those who remained neutral.
Despite the US State Department’s statement that this decision will not lead to a rift in unity with allies and partners, the statements of other countries indicate the opposite.
As for Ukraine’s accession to NATO, the alliance’s laws indicate that it is not possible to annex any country while it is in a state of war, in addition to the unwillingness of some countries to enter into a direct confrontation with Russia.
On the other hand, talk escalated from Germany and other countries regarding providing security guarantees to Ukraine, in addition to the possibility of establishing a NATO-Ukraine Council as an alternative to Kiev being included in the alliance as a member.
In this context, the writer and political researcher, Yevgeny Sidorov, said:
The feasibility of the war for Russia is obvious, which is the fulfillment of the tasks of the special military operation. The NATO summit should have illustrated the great successes of Ukraine in the counterattack, but the truth is that there are very few results on the ground. Russia did not reject negotiations, and entered several rounds in this context, but American pressure prevented results from being reached.
For his part, researcher at the German Institute for International and Security Affairs, Raphael Bosong, said:
NATO summit will discuss Sweden’s accession and defense spending of member states. NATO has become vital, and the Russian invasion gave it the task of deterrence, and we hope that we will move faster towards the annexation of Sweden and Ukraine in the future.
In turn, the former US Assistant Secretary of Defense, General Mark Kimmitt, said:
NATO members are not willing to give Ukraine consent to join the alliance at this time. Russia is losing the war, and it expected a quick victory over Kiev. The Russian invasion made the West think regarding the importance of Ukraine’s entry into the alliance in the future following the end of the war.
