NATO plans to open Japan office to facilitate Indo-Pacific talks

Citing Japanese and NATO officials, the Nikkei newspaper reported on Wednesday that NATO plans to open Asia’s first liaison office in Japan to facilitate consultations in the region.

(Deutsche Welle Chinese website) Nikkei News reported on Wednesday (May 3) that in response toGeopolitical challenges posed by China and RussiaNATO plans to open a liaison office in Japan to facilitate consultations with NATO security partners including South Korea, Australia and New Zealand.

Spokesmen for NATO and Japan’s foreign ministry did not respond to Archyde.com’ requests for comment.

According to the Nikkei news report, the proposed liaison office is initially planned to have only one person, and it will be put into operation in Tokyo next year, but details such as whether Japan will provide funds and whether NATO will provide funds are still under discussion.

According to reports, NATO also has similar offices in New York, Vienna, Ukraine and other places.

NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg visited Japan in January and met Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida.In a joint statement after their meeting, the two said Russia’s aggression against Ukraine and Moscow’s deepening military cooperation with Beijing had created the most dangerous tension in the world since World War II. The two sides pledged to strengthen their relationship to address historic security challenges.

Japan and NATO are seeking to deepen cooperation on countering cyber threats, destructive technologies and disinformation, aiming to sign an individually tailored partnership plan ahead of a NATO summit in July, Nikkei reported.
