NATO has a plan for military aid to Ukraine in case of Trump’s victory in the elections

NATO will send a senior civilian official to Ukraine as part of new measures to bolster long-term support for Ukraine that are expected to be announced at the alliance’s summit in Washington next week, writes Wall Street Journal citing sources in the US and NATO.

The moves come amid the rise of right-wing forces in Europe and the growing possibility that former President Donald Trump could return to the White House and reduce American support for Ukraine, the publication notes.

NATO is also creating a new command in Wiesbaden, Germany, to coordinate the supply of military equipment to Kyiv and the training of Ukrainian troops, the article said.

The operation, to be called NATO Security Assistance and Training for Ukraine, will involve about 700 U.S. and other alliance troops. They will take over much of the mission that the U.S. military has been carrying out since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the publication writes.

As the WSJ notes, the new initiatives have been in the works for months and have taken on new urgency following President Joe Biden’s poor showing in Thursday’s televised debate with Trump — and the former president’s critical statements about American money spent on Ukraine.

NATO, not Washington, will be responsible for military aid and training, “so even if the U.S. reduces or withdraws support for these efforts, they will not disappear,” former U.S. Ambassador to NATO Ivo Daalder told the publication.
