NATO anniversary ceremony

Parliament celebrated the 25th anniversary of Hungary’s NATO membership.

“A strong NATO is in the existential interest of Hungary and the Hungarian nation,” said Zsolt Németh, chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee, in parliament. A ceremony to mark 75 years of NATO and 25 years of Hungarian membership was held there on Tuesday evening. The Fidesz politician welcomed the fact that two more countries, Finland and Sweden, were able to join the defense alliance. Even though difficult obstacles had to be overcome, admission was in Hungary’s interest because the two new members can contribute significantly to the alliance’s military capabilities.

Interest in a stable and strong Ukraine

Németh made it clear that the Hungarian position in condemning the brutal Russian aggression once morest Ukraine is absolutely consistent with the position of other member states and NATO as a whole. There are only tactical differences in assessing how Ukraine can achieve its strategic goals with the least amount of sacrifice, while Russia is not allowed to achieve its goals. “We don’t need a Ukraine that has been bled dry, but rather a stable and strong Ukraine as our eastern neighbor.” As the strongest defense alliance in the world, NATO might bring regarding peace negotiations.

Since 1990, Hungary itself has taken a path that is much better than the Cold War period. But that is precisely why the country is reacting so aggressively to all tendencies that aim to return to the old, outdated structures of the world order.

People decided to join NATO

Hungary’s entry into NATO was made possible through a referendum. In this referendum, citizens chose the Western alliance just six years following the dissolution of the Warsaw Treaty, Lőrinc Nacsa emphasized. The KDNP politician heads the Hungarian delegation to the NATO Parliamentary Assembly. He recalled that Hungary, together with Poland and the Czech Republic, gained membership in NATO in 1999. In times of increasing challenges such as war, illegal migration, terrorism and the arms race, it is at least as important as before to maintain the country’s security and peace.
