**Introduction:**

The world is facing a complex and evolving security landscape. Against this backdrop, NATO, the world’s most powerful military alliance, finds itself grappling with a myriad of threats. Joining us today is Jens Stoltenberg, the Secretary General of NATO, to discuss the challenges facing the alliance and its response to them.

**Archyde:** secretary general Stoltenberg, thank you for joining us today. You recently issued a stark warning about the increasing number of threats facing NATO. What are the most pressing concerns for the alliance right now?

**stoltenberg:** We are indeed facing the biggest security crisis in decades. The ongoing war in Ukraine, fueled by Russia’s aggression, has cast a long shadow over European security. This conflict has demonstrated the very real threat posed by Russia’s willingness to use military force to achieve its political goals.Along with this, we are witnessing China’s increasing assertiveness on the world stage, which presents a notable challenge to the rules-based international order.[[1](https://www.economist.com/europe/2024/05/24/natos-boss-wants-to-free-ukraine-to-strike-hard-inside-russia)]

**Archyde:** You have stated that we are facing a confluence of factors, a perfect storm if you will, of threats. How is NATO adapting to this evolving landscape?

**Stoltenberg:** NATO is responding to these challenges by strengthening its deterrence and defense posture. We are increasing our military presence in Eastern Europe, enhancing our capabilities, and reinforcing our collective defense commitments. We are also working closely with our partners around the world to address shared security concerns.

**Archyde:** There have been calls for NATO to become more actively involved in the conflict in ukraine. Some argue that the alliance should provide Ukraine with more advanced weaponry, even potentially facilitating strikes inside Russia. What is NATO’s stance on this issue?

**Stoltenberg:** NATO’s unwavering support for Ukraine is based on its right to self-defense.We have provided significant military aid to Ukraine, helping them defend their territory against Russian aggression. Though, NATO is a defensive alliance and will not become directly involved in the conflict. Our focus remains on deterring further Russian aggression and supporting Ukraine’s right to self-defense.

**Archyde:** Speaking about defense spending, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has also voiced concerns about the need for increased defense spending by members. can you elaborate on this?

**Stoltenberg:** We are seeing a resurgence of strategic competition, requiring NATO members to invest in their defense capabilities. Rutte is right to emphasize the urgency of this issue. We need to ensure that NATO remains a credible deterrent and is equipped to address the complex security challenges of the 21st century. Increased defense spending is essential to achieving this goal.

**Archyde:** looking forward, what do you see as the biggest challenges and opportunities for NATO in the years to come?

**Stoltenberg:** The core challenge for NATO remains ensuring the collective defense of its members while adapting to a rapidly changing world.

This will require continued political commitment, strong transatlantic unity, and a willingness to invest in collective defense. However, I am optimistic about the future of NATO. The alliance has proven itself to be resilient and adaptable throughout its history. I am confident that NATO will continue to be a force for stability and security in the years to come.
