Washington – NATO called on China on Wednesday to end its support for Russia in its war once morest Ukraine.
This came in a final statement following the meeting of the heads of state and government of NATO’s Atlantic Council.
The statement said the alliance would continue to support Ukraine “on the irreversible path to full Euro-Atlantic integration, including NATO membership.”
He pointed out that the alliance members decided to provide at least $40 billion in funding to Ukraine in 2025.
The statement stressed that the invitation to join the alliance will be sent to Ukraine once the allies agree and the conditions are met.
“We fully support Ukraine’s right to choose its own security arrangements and determine its own future without outside interference,” he added.
Regarding its future in NATO, the statement explained that Ukraine has become “politically integrated with the alliance.”
He stressed that Russia is solely responsible for the war in Ukraine, which is a “flagrant violation of international law,” including the UN Charter.
He made it clear that Russian forces and officials might not remain unpunished for human rights violations, war crimes and other violations of international law.
The statement called on all countries to avoid assisting Russia in Ukraine in any way.
He condemned “all those who facilitate, and thus prolong, Russia’s war in Ukraine,” singling out Belarus, North Korea, Iran and China.
The statement described China as “certainly facilitating” Russia’s war efforts in Ukraine.
He pointed out that China continues to create systematic challenges to Euro-Atlantic security.
The statement urged China to stop its material and political support for Russia’s war in Ukraine.
He also expressed concerns regarding China’s rapid expansion of space capabilities and nuclear arsenal.
In its statement, NATO called on Beijing to participate in strategic risk reduction talks.
He also called on it to stop all support it provides to Russia in its war once morest Ukraine.
“We call on China, which bears a special responsibility to uphold the goals and principles of the UN Charter as a permanent member of the UN Security Council, to cease all forms of material and political support for the Russian war effort,” the statement said.
On another level, the statement said that the war once morest terrorism remains indispensable in terms of NATO’s collective defence.
He stressed that the alliance will continue to confront “with all determination” the threats and challenges posed by terrorists and terrorist organizations.
He pointed out that the Western Balkans and Black Sea regions are of strategic importance to the alliance.
The statement stressed NATO’s strong commitment to security and stability in the two regions.
He indicated that political dialogue and practical cooperation with the Western Balkans will continue to develop in order to support regional peace and security.
Referring to the Montreux Convention on the Straits, the statement affirmed support for the efforts of NATO members to maintain the security, safety, stability and freedom of navigation in the Black Sea region.
The Montreux Convention, signed in 1936, allows warships of countries not bordering the Black Sea to pass through the Dardanelles and Bosphorus Straits, provided that they notify Turkey of the passage 15 days in advance, and remain in the Black Sea for a period not exceeding 21 days.
The statement concluded by stating that the next NATO summit in 2025 will be held in the Netherlands, while the 2026 summit will be held in Turkey.
Washington will host the NATO summit on Wednesday and Thursday, which is celebrating its 75th anniversary.
