NATO begins the Flotex-22 naval exercise in the Strait of Gibraltar and the Atlantic

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) begins this Monday a multinational training, Flotex-22, in the Strait of Gibraltar and the Western Atlantic.

The Permanent Representation of Spain to NATO posted on Twitter that the objective of the exercise, which is held annually, is to “improve collective crisis response operations in order to train in generic naval tasks such as maritime power projection, maritime control and maritime safety awareness”.

In this year’s edition, which will last until June 24, Germany, Belgium, Canada, Spain, the United States, France, Greece, Italy and the United Kingdom will be involved.

The training will conclude shortly before the NATO summit in Madrid, which is scheduled for June 28, 29 and 30 and which coincides with the 40th anniversary of Spain’s entry into the Alliance.

Last Friday, ahead of the Flotex-22 exercise, the multipurpose frigate ‘Blas de Lezo’ and the combat supply ship ‘Cantabria’ called at the port of Malaga together with the Canadian frigate ‘Montreal’. These ships will participate in the training as Permanent NATO Grouping number 2 (SNMG-2), according to the Spanish Ministry of Defense.
