Ukraine is “in the midst of a military conflict”, so it is impossible to name the exact timing of the country’s entry into NATO. This was stated by NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg in an interview with the TV channel PBS.
So he commented on the words of the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky, who had previously been indignant at the delay in the process of admitting the country to NATO. Stoltenberg noted that he understands the feelings of the leader of Ukraine. “I understand that he insists on a clear timetable for joining NATO. At the same time, I believe that it is impossible to name the exact dates when we are at the height of the conflict, ”said the Secretary General. “And I think that all allies will also be very clear that the most urgent task now is to ensure the victory of Ukraine as a sovereign, independent state, if we need to provide more military support. Because if Ukraine does not win, then there can be no question of any membership, because only a sovereign, independent, democratic Ukraine can become a member of NATO,” Stoltenberg added.
Earlier in an interview, Zelensky said that Ukraine “should have been in NATO before the start of the conflict.” According to him, “the country had 15 years.” “But tell me: how many lives is worth one phrase at the Vilnius summit?
