If you are in the United States and receive an unusual alarm on your phone on October 4, 2023, don’t worry. It is a measure taken by the United States federal government to guarantee the operation of its Emergency Alert System (EAS) and Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA). Do you want to know more regarding it? This note is for you.
WHY WILL THE ALARM SOUND ON WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 4?
Wednesday, October 4, is the date selected for the national test of both systems to be carried out. In that sense, the EAS division will send the emergency alert to radios and televisions. While the one corresponding to the WEA will do the same with users’ mobile phones.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is in charge of the test in coordination with the Federal Communications Commission, so the agency explained the reasons behind its decision.
“The purpose of the October 4 test is to ensure that systems remain effective means of alerting the public to emergencies, particularly those of a national nature,” a statement read.
It is worth specifying that the law requires FEMA to carry out national tests of the Integrated Public Alert and Warning System (IPAWS), at least once every three years.
In this way, it is expected that the population will be prepared for any real emergency, as a result of a terrorist attack, natural disasters or other dangers.

HOW DOES THE ALARM WORK ON WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 4?
The national test lasts 30 minutes and, on phones, a sound accompanied by vibration will be emitted. This aims to make the alert accessible to all types of audiences, even people with disabilities.
The devices will display a message that will read: “THIS IS A TEST of the National Wireless Emergency Alert System. “No action is needed.”
On the other hand, the lit television screens will present the following text: “This is a nationwide test of the Emergency Alert System, issued by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, which covers the United States from 2:20 p.m. 2:50 p.m. ET. This is just a test. “No action is required from the public.”
Finally, radio stations will interrupt their regular programming to broadcast a similar announcement.
As the alert text points out, it is not necessary for the public to do anything when receiving the message. This is just a test.

WHICH PHONES WILL RECEIVE THE ALARM ON WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 4?
In accordance with the website From the United States Federal Communications Commission (FCC), test messages are only available for:
Phones compatible with the Wireless Emergency Alerts – WEA system (some older devices do not receive this type of alerts). Activated cell phones that are not in “airplane mode.” Phones within the coverage area of a tower and enabled to receive a signal from said tower.
