This weekend, 8,500 letters from KU Leuven will be sent, reports The last news. Those who receive one will have the opportunity to participate in the vast “National Study on the Epidemiology of Mental Health Disorders”.
It aims to find out if all the crises in recent years have had an impact on us and if we are finding enough help. This is the first time in twenty years that scientists have taken a close interest in the mental health of Belgians.
“The first ‘European Study on Mental Disorders’ taught us that our country had a similar score to other Western countries in terms of mental problems,” says Professor of Clinical Psychology Patrick Luyten (KU Leuven). “But we didn’t get good results. In women, for example, the risk of depression was twenty percent. And now we are going through the Covid-19, a war, the climate threat in no time. This makes the risk of psychological problems quite high. »
The research team encourages everyone who receives a letter to complete the questionnaire online. It takes regarding thirty minutes. In addition, each participant can, if they wish, receive a brief feedback on their own well-being followingwards and receive general information on mental health and telephone helplines.
