The National Prosecutor, Ángel Valencia, confirmed that the Public Prosecutor’s Office will not provide the Ethics Commission of the Supreme Court with the requested copy of the WhatsApp chats that were extracted from the cell phone of lawyer Luis Hermosilla in the middle of his criminal investigation and that would be related to alleged irregularities committed by ministers of the highest court in some appointments.
According to ADN radio, Valencia stated in a letter that the refusal is related to the fact that the request contains information included in ongoing criminal investigations, which, in accordance with the provisions of the criminal procedure code and other laws in force, must be kept secret.
In a letter, the head of the Public Prosecutor’s Office “reiterated the greatest desire for inter-institutional collaboration for the clarification of the facts by the Ethics Commission of the Supreme Court, in accordance with the powers of the Public Prosecutor’s Office.”
The Supreme Court requested this information in response to accusations of influence peddling that arose from some of the conversations made public by Ciper investigations, which implicated Hermosilla with former judge Juan Antonio Poblete and the partner of one of the ministers of the highest court, Gonzalo Migueles.
In fact, regarding the latter, his partner, Angela Vivanco, had already requested the National Prosecutor’s Office not to hand over the conversations.
According to Ciper, Migueles allegedly offered Aysén prosecutor Carlos Palma a series of benefits in exchange for supporting Ángel Valencia to become National Prosecutor. A screenshot of this conversation was found on Hermosilla’s phone.
“Good morning, dear friend. Doctorate and replacement of Armendáriz OK, approved,” says Migueles’ message, which would refer to the payment of a doctorate for Palma and the position of replacing the prosecutor of the North Center, Xavier Armendáriz.
