National soccer player Florian Grillitsch has returned to TSG 1899 Hoffenheim. The midfielder received a contract with the German Bundesliga club that runs until June 2026, the club announced on Tuesday. Grillitsch already played for Hoffenheim from 2017 to 2022 before he started looking for a new challenge. The Lower Austrian came to Ajax Amsterdam last season, but the playing times were manageable.

“In the past few weeks I have been in the fortunate position of being able to examine a large number of options for my sporting future and I made a conscious and full decision to return to TSG,” said Grillitsch in a statement from Hoffenheim. The 27-year-old was available on a free transfer following his contract expired in Amsterdam. In the ÖFB team, the clock generator last convinced as a substitute in the 2-0 home win over Sweden.

At Hoffenheim, an Austrian continues to play in the professional team following Christoph Baumgartner recently switched to RB Leipzig. Stefan Posch, who was already on loan, went straight to FC Bologna. Grillitsch is expected to have leadership qualities on and off the field in the twelfth of the past season. “After a difficult sporting year for him, that’s not only our hope, but also our expectation. Because he’s got everything for it,” said TSG sporting director Alexander Rosen.

At Ajax, Grillitsch made 18 appearances this season, but did not play 700 minutes. Before his first engagement at Hoffenheim, he ran for Werder Bremen, where he had matured to become a professional.
