National Outage: Brands Affected by Bank Terminal Failure and Card Payment Disruption on October 21, 2023

Several brands were affected this Saturday, October 21, 2023 by a national outage affecting bank terminals and preventing card payments. Which led to some traffic jams at the checkout. Perpignan did not escape this incident which was being resolved at the end of the day.

Messages from customers began to flood in late Saturday morning on social networks to report problems throughout France. Impossible, they said, to make bank card payments in various stores such as McDonald’s, Ikea, Carrefour, Auchan, Leroy Merlin…

Indeed, a computer failure impacted certain businesses in the region “which rely on the same technical service provider”, said the spokesperson for the Bank Card Group, according to AFP, quoted by Le Monde. “Around 12:30 p.m. and until 1:20 p.m., Worldline experienced some transaction disruptions on one of its payment platforms. This is not a cyber attack, nor a problem with the CB payment network. he added.

In Perpignan, according to witnesses on site, around 2 p.m., the Aldi store at Moulin-à-Vent had even put a sign on its window to warn its customers of the inconvenience. While customers arrived from the Auchan hypermarket explaining that they had encountered the same problem there. Some, without cash on them, decided to leave their shopping carts at the checkout with their shopping.

At the same time, at Carrefour-City avenue Pierre-Cambres, where they alerted them to the situation through an inscription in the window, consumers took things philosophically and paid their dues in hard cash.

“We row especially on a busy Saturday day”

In the city center, the trouble started in the morning for the Chez Paul bakery, rue Louis Blanc. “No payment by credit card went through! Or following several minutes, following the terminal was abnormally slow”, explained an employee. “In general, customers took it well. It must be said that many pay in cash, and I admit that today, it was better to have some with you.” By mid-followingnoon, the problems seemed to be getting better.

Which was not yet the case at the Monoprix store, rue de la Barre. “From the first uses of our POS this morning, it was buggy. Impossible to pay with the bank card, including contactless. Those who had cash were able to pay for their purchases. Others left their shopping with us and went withdraw notes from the ATM next door – where queues were also starting to form – and came back to pay. For my part, I contacted our Cashier Support in Paris who advised me to turn off all the cashiers and to turn them on once more, but without success. Ah, that’s for rowing, we row, especially on a Saturday, a busy day!” At 4 p.m., the situation had not returned to normal. But at the national level it was announced that the problem “was being resolved”.
