NNA – On the second day of the activities of the “Sixth International Education Conference” in the Jordanian capital, Amman, the official opening ceremony was held in the presence of representatives of the Ministers of Education and Labor, the Chairman of the Executive Council of Education International, and members of the Arab region.
After a wonderful artistic presentation of Jordanian folklore, it was decided to assign Mrs. Manal Hudhaifa from the Association of Basic Education Teachers in Lebanon to preside over the conference sessions for two consecutive days.
Then the speech of the Minister of Labor was delivered by the Director General and he talked regarding the impact of distance education on the educational sector.
First session
The first session included a speech by the President of the International for Education, Mrs. Susan Hopgood, in which she announced the launch of a campaign on World Education Day to support educational unions, finance public education, and confront the privatization of education, speaking regarding the global financial crisis that affected the educational sector, with varying damages from one region to another.
Then the interventions of the participating delegations took place, and the speech of Lebanon was delivered by the Secretary of the Secondary Education Association, Haider Khalifeh, in which he regretted “the policy of Arab governments not to invest in education and the low wages of teachers,” considering that “this is the reason for the lack of development in our Arab region.”
And he cried out regarding “the bitter reality of teachers and professors in Lebanon until they became the ones who spent on the job and became unable even to be able to reach their work centers, which puts the entire Lebanese society in the circle of danger.”
He addressed donors and international organizations concerned with educational affairs through the International Education International to “provide assistance to teachers and professors through the establishment of the International Teacher Fund, financial support and management through teachers’ associations in Arab countries.”
The second session
The second session came within the framework of the rules of procedure for the Arab regional structure, where the regional report was presented and voted on with approval. The financial situation and the impact of economic conditions on unions, which in turn affects the work of the structure in the Arab region, were presented.
Third session
In the third session, the conference adopted the amendment proposal submitted by the President of the Association of Basic Education Teachers in Lebanon, Hussein Jawad, which stipulated that two vice-presidents be elected and that a woman be among those elected, and the vote was approved.
