NNA – The head of the Free Patriotic Movement, MP Gebran Bassil, announced in an interview with France 24 that he did not run for the presidency “to make matters easier, which is a concession of a basic right. If the matter were to be portrayed in a different way and accused of obstruction, then it would be contrary to logic.” .
He stressed that he “met those he should meet in Paris and at his request,” explaining that “the goal of the visit has been achieved.”
He said, “I usually do not disclose the meetings that I hold. The crisis is complex in Lebanon, and one of its most important aspects is the presidential vacancy. However, there is a governmental vacancy, absence of reform and institutional paralysis. The only existing institution, i.e. the House of Representatives, is not able, according to our system, to stand alone in the country.”
He pointed out that he offered “a complete vision of a solution that will get us out of the stalemate, and it is not only related to names, but rather immunizing any name with a vision of how to reach reform,” noting that “there are candidates supported by the outside, but there is an opportunity for the Lebanese to come with a president made in Lebanon.”
He said, “We do not want to put forward a non-serious candidate who has no chance of reaching, and therefore we vote with a white paper, and I did not run so as not to complicate matters in order to avoid a vacuum and to reach an understanding on a president in order to succeed.”
Bassil reiterated his lack of support for the candidacy of the head of the “Marada” movement, Suleiman Franjieh, and said: “We do not agree with him on the reform political program of building the state. And with our understanding of the positions of other parties such as Hezbollah in protecting the country and the resistance and others, we see that the priority today is to build the state without contradicting it.” This is with the protection of Lebanon.
