NNA – Akkar – The activities of the town of Fneideq, following the massive encroachments that are taking place in the Qamoua forests and the Al-Adhar forest, due to the unprecedented unreasonable felling of perennial trees, called for a meeting to discuss plans to limit the systematic destruction of the forest.
The meeting, which was held in the Doha Mosque hall, was attended by MP Walid Al-Baarini, President of the Union of Municipalities of Jurd Al-Qaytaa Abdul Ilah Zakaria, Mayor of Fneideq Sheikh Samih Abdel-Hay, Muhammad Ajaj Ibrahim, former mayors, members of the municipal council, sheikhs of the town and its mayors, directors of schools and institutes, and activists of the town.
The meeting announced in a statement, that it was agreed to “prevent tree cutting, deforestation and any kind of encroachment on forests, and assign 20 volunteers from Fnideq’s families to contribute to the protection of forests, monitor roads, prevent the exit of any aggressor on forests, and confiscate all tools and machines used in the encroachment. Roads leading to the forests immediately and confiscation of any mechanism that might reopen the cut roads, in coordination between officials and security forces.
It was also agreed to “establish a financial support fund for the Department of Forest Protection and appoint a committee to manage it to issue a weekly report, and that the Fnideq activities (the deputy, the president of the union, the current and former mayor and the mayors) hold a monthly or emergency meeting to take relevant decisions and monitor the implementation of the plan.”
The meeting called on “the security forces to strike with an iron fist all the aggressors on the forests and to withdraw all the bulldozers operating in Al-Qamou`a. , warning firewood dealers and tree aggressors to stop any activity contrary to the decision of the meeting, under the threat of security pursuit, raiding of their homes and announcing their names, declaring “working to study the cases of the poorest families and studying how to help them in securing heating.”
