The Federal Cabinet today decided to update the National Hydrogen Strategy. From the point of view of Uniti, the federal association of medium-sized oil companies, it is positive that hydrogen derivatives are generally given important importance. Overall, the paper falls short, says managing director Elmar Kühn. “It shows that the federal government continues to underestimate the role of green molecules in CO2-neutral road traffic.”
The federal government continues to give priority to the direct use of electricity, but green hydrogen and its derivatives should primarily be used to store and transport electricity, according to the updated National Hydrogen Strategy. By restricting the use of hydrogen and its derivatives in road transport to heavy commercial vehicles, e-fuels remain largely unconsidered as an alternative to the use of direct electricity and are only limited to a narrow range of applications. This particularly affects the many millions of motor vehicles that have an internal combustion engine and are therefore not included in climate protection efforts, complains Uniti. “With the national hydrogen strategy, the federal government is falling far short of its own demands. “It deters investors in the production ramp-up of e-fuels as well as potential users,” says Kühn. From the association’s point of view, clear signals are now particularly necessary in the federal government’s outstanding hydrogen import strategy in order to be able to use e-fuels widely as energy imports.
