THE National Human Rights Commission (Komnas HAM) expressed its concern and requested that the shooting incident of human rights activist Yan Christian Warinussy be investigated immediately.

National Human Rights Commission Chair Atnike Nova Sigiro admitted that his party had communicated directly with the victim regarding the chronology of the shooting and the injuries suffered.

“Based on this information, the victim suffered abrasions on the right side of his chest due to a bullet that is suspected to have come from an air rifle. The victim has also reported the incident to the Manokwari Police and was given a referral for a medical examination to the Manokwari Regional Hospital,” said Atnike in Jakarta, Thursday (18/7).

As a result of the shooting incident, the victim was then referred to the West Papua Provincial Hospital for treatment. Atnike said that Komnas HAM will continue to monitor the progress of the handling of the report and the condition of the victim.

“Komnas HAM encourages a fast, transparent, fair and professional law enforcement process by the police,” said Atnike.

In addition, Komnas HAM urges that there be a guarantee of protection for civil society that advocates and contributes to the respect, protection, and fulfillment of human rights (human rights defenders). (Z-2)
