**Host:** Welcome to our program, where we discuss pressing issues affecting our world today. With us is Maria Elena Rodriguez, a human rights advocate deeply concerned about the recent events involving Colombian migrants in Mexico. Thank you for joining us, Maria.
**Maria Elena Rodriguez:** Thank you for having me.
**Host:** Let’s dive into the incident. On November 2, two Colombian migrants were killed by the National Guard in Tecate while trying to cross into the United States. President Claudia Sheinbaum stated that the incident is still under investigation. What are your thoughts on this?
**Maria Elena Rodriguez:** This incident is deeply troubling. The use of lethal force against unarmed migrants is unacceptable, and it highlights the growing tensions at the U.S.-Mexico border. Ensuring the safety and rights of migrants should always be a priority, and this tragic event raises serious questions about the protocols in place for border enforcement.
**Host:** You mentioned tensions at the border. How do you think such incidents impact public perception and policy regarding migration in Mexico and the U.S.?
**Maria Elena Rodriguez:** Incidents like this can create a climate of fear and hostility towards migrants, which can lead to more stringent and oppressive policies. It’s crucial for policymakers to understand that migrants are often fleeing violence and seeking better opportunities. Instead of punitive measures, we should focus on humane responses that protect their rights.
**Host:** There have been strong reactions from human rights collectives condemning this attack. What do you think is the next step for these groups?
**Maria Elena Rodriguez:** Human rights organizations are calling for transparency and accountability. They demand a thorough investigation into the events that led to this confrontation. Additionally, they seek reparations for the victims’ families and a commitment from authorities to prevent future tragedies. It’s vital for the government to engage with these groups and listen to their demands.
**Host:** President Sheinbaum mentioned a safety report will be issued soon. What do you hope will come from that report?
**Maria Elena Rodriguez:** I hope the report will provide detailed insights into what happened that day. It needs to address why lethal force was employed and how authorities plan to prevent such incidents in the future. More importantly, we need to see a commitment to protect the rights of all individuals, regardless of their immigration status.
