### Interview with Human Rights Advocate Maria Torres on Migrant Safety in Mexico
**Editor**: Thank you for joining us, Maria. In light of the recent incident where two Colombian migrants were killed by the National Guard in Baja California, what is your reaction to President Claudia Sheinbaum’s statement regarding the ongoing investigation?
**Maria Torres**: Thank you for having me. It’s disheartening to hear about such a tragic event. The loss of life, especially among vulnerable populations like migrants, is deeply concerning. The President’s acknowledgment of the investigation is a step in the right direction, but it needs to be followed with transparency and accountability.
**Editor**: President Sheinbaum mentioned that a safety report will be presented in eight days. What do you think should be included in this report?
**Maria Torres**: The report should provide comprehensive details about the circumstances leading to the confrontation. We want clarity on why lethal force was used against unarmed migrants. It should also address the welfare of the injured, including the minor, and how the authorities plan to support those affected.
**Editor**: Human rights groups have condemned the attack and called for accountability. What specific actions do you believe the government should take in response to this incident?
**Maria Torres**: The government must take immediate steps to ensure justice for the victims’ families. This includes a thorough and impartial investigation, a transparent process that involves civil society and human rights organizations, and necessary reparations for those harmed. Additionally, training for law enforcement on the rights of migrants is crucial to prevent future tragedies.
**Editor**: Lastly, how can the international community assist in improving the safety of migrants in Mexico?
**Maria Torres**: The international community has a crucial role to play. Support in the form of funding for humanitarian assistance, advocacy for policy changes that protect migrants, and pressure on the Mexican government to uphold its human rights obligations can lead to significant improvements. It’s essential that the narrative surrounding migration shifts towards one of protection and respect for human dignity.
**Editor**: Thank you, Maria, for your insights on this critical issue. We hope to see positive changes for migrant safety soon.
**Maria Torres**: Thank you for bringing attention to this important matter.
