**Interview with Human Rights Advocate, Maria Gomez**
**Editor**: Thank you for joining us today, Maria. In light of the recent confrontation involving the National Guard and Colombian migrants in Tecate, can you share your thoughts on President Claudia Sheinbaum’s investigation announcement?
**Maria Gomez**: Thank you for having me. It’s a troubling situation, to say the least. We have seen too many instances where migrants, seeking a better life, are met with violence. The president’s commitment to an investigation is a step in the right direction; however, we need more transparency and accountability.
**Editor**: The incident resulted in the deaths of two Colombian individuals and left several injured. What do you think should be the immediate response from the authorities?
**Maria Gomez**: First and foremost, there must be a clear and thorough investigation that involves independent observers, not just internal reviews. The authorities should publicly share their findings and ensure that those responsible for this violence are held accountable. Additionally, reparations for the victims’ families are essential.
**Editor**: Human rights groups have condemned the attack and are demanding clarity. What measures do you think can be implemented to protect migrants in the future?
**Maria Gomez**: There are several key actions we need to advocate for: enhanced training for national security forces on human rights, the establishment of protocols when dealing with vulnerable populations like migrants, and stronger support systems for people in transit. Migrants are human beings deserving of dignity and safety, and we must defend their rights.
**Editor**: Is there a message you would like to send to the government on this issue?
**Maria Gomez**: Absolutely. I urge the government to prioritize the safety and rights of migrants. The lives of these individuals matter, and their protection should be a fundamental priority. An equitable society is one that ensures the rights of all, especially those most vulnerable.
**Editor**: Thank you, Maria, for sharing your insights on this critical issue.
**Maria Gomez**: Thank you for covering this important topic. It is crucial we keep the conversation going.
