National Electric Energy Production Grows by 0.7% in 2023, Boosted by Concessional and Renewable Sources

Electric energy production at the national level increased by 0.7% at the end of the first eight months of 2023, following an increase of 2.9% the previous year, according to the Department of Studies and Financial Forecasts. (DEPF) under the Ministry of Economy and Finance.

This progression is attributable to the improvement in concessional production of 4.2% and that of renewable energies relating to law 13-09 of 3.8%, mitigated by the withdrawal of production from the National Office of the electricity and drinking water (ONEE) by 9.4%, explains the DEPF in its recent economic report.

In terms of the sector’s trade with the outside world, growth in the volume of imported energy slowed to 39.3% at the end of August 2023, instead of +121.3% a year earlier, specifies the same source.

As for the exported volume, it fell by 33.7%, however covering an increase of 32.4% for the first two months of the third quarter of 2023.
Regarding the volume of net called energy, it increased by 3.5% at the end of August 2023, following an increase of 5.8% at the end of August 2022.

In addition, the DEPF reports an acceleration in the growth of electrical energy consumption to 5.6% for the first two months of the third quarter of 2023, following an increase of 2.1% in Q2-2023. and 4.4% in Q1-2023.

At the end of the first eight months of 2023, electrical energy consumption increased by 3.9%, following an increase of 5% a year earlier.

This upward trend is attributable to the increase in sales of “very high, high and medium voltage energy, excluding distributors” of 6.7% (following +6.5%), those intended for distributors of 2.6% and those intended for households 2.4%.
