National Drill 2024: What day and what time will it be?

MEXICO CITY (apro).- This Friday, Laura Velázquez Alzúa, head of the National Civil Protection Coordination (CNPC), informed President Andrés Manuel López Obrador that the 2024 National Drill will be held next September.

According to the agency, the earthquake risk prevention exercise will take place on September 19 at 11:00 a.m. More than 14,000 loudspeakers will be used.

The hypothesis will be a 7.5 magnitude earthquake with an epicenter in Acapulco, at a depth of 20 kilometers and would be felt in the central area of ​​the country, such as: Guerrero, Michoacán, Morelos, Oaxaca, Chiapas, Puebla, State of Mexico, Colima and Tlaxcala.

The hypothesis is used to represent Civil Protection and emergency response actions, previously planned and set up with a specific scenario, designed based on the identification and analysis of risks, as well as the vulnerability of the systems that could be affected.

  • The population must prepare for the drill, following the instructions of the Coordination:
  • Make a plan to know what to do.
  • Simulate emergency situations.
  • Assign responsibilities to each person.
  • Have a telephone directory, first aid kit and important documents on hand.
  • Identify safety zones, emergency exits and meeting points.

The CNPC called on workers and families to participate in this activity and invited the population to register their properties on the digital platform, no later than September 18 at 11:59 p.m.

The objectives of this exercise are:

  • Inform the population and citizens.
  • Spread the culture of Civil Protection.
  • Improve the emergency and disaster response capacity of SINAPROC members.
  • Evaluate and correct an effective response to possible real emergency or disaster situations.
  • Examine how safe the property and its surroundings are.
  • Prepare the actions to be carried out to improve safety conditions.
  • Design evacuation routes and choose where people will gather in the event of a disaster.
  • List the tools and materials that are recommended to have on hand for self-protection, communication and ongoing staff training.
