As usual, some doors will open in Austria on tomorrow’s national holiday – some will open for the first time.
The annual exhibition of the Armed Forces on Vienna’s Heldenplatz has a long tradition – this is taking place for the 29th time. In addition to the inauguration of around 1,200 recruits, weapons and vehicles, including the “Lion” helicopter and the “Skyranger” anti-aircraft system, will be presented there.
At the press conference on Heldenplatz, Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner (VP) said that the army wanted to show “what it can do” with the “large contingent.” The tank column was then received by Minister Tanner. Tanner would like to keep her position, she said on the sidelines of the event. It is her “dream job”, but the composition of the next government remains to be seen.

The army is also represented in Salzburg: Those interested can also visit the Schwarzenberg barracks, where around 700 new soldiers will be sworn in on Saturday. Afterwards, a combat demonstration by the emergency services is planned. There will also be a flag jump and flights by the air force stationed in Salzburg.
There will also be a lot going on in and around the Hofburg, the Federal Chancellery and the Parliament: After the traditional wreath-laying ceremony in the crypt on Heldenplatz by Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen and the Federal Government, the celebrations will begin in the morning. Both the presidential office and parliament invite you to the open day until 5 p.m.

Tours of the House offer an insight into the committee rooms, which are otherwise not accessible to the public. The Federal Chancellery on Ballhausplatz and the Hofburg also offer tours – the Federal President himself opens the gates at 10 a.m.
Although the Freedom Party is currently less in the mood to celebrate due to the Federal President’s mandate to form a government, Karl Nehammer, the Blues are nevertheless also inviting people to an event. Behind the parliament there is free food from the goulash cannon and a food truck decorated with the portrait of the Styrian FP regional leader Mario Kunasek.
Interview with Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner on Austria’s National Holiday Events
Interviewer: Thank you for joining us today, Minister Tanner. As we approach Austria’s National Holiday, can you tell us what people can expect from this year’s annual exhibition of the Armed Forces at Heldenplatz in Vienna?
Minister Tanner: Thank you for having me. This year marks the 29th edition of our Armed Forces exhibition, and it promises to be truly special. We will be inaugurating around 1,200 new recruits and will showcase a variety of equipment, including our impressive “Lion” helicopter and the “Skyranger” anti-aircraft system. It’s a chance for the public to see firsthand the capabilities of our military.
Interviewer: That sounds exciting! What are your goals for the exhibition this year?
Minister Tanner: Our goal is to demonstrate what our army can do and to highlight the significant personnel and equipment that we have at our disposal. It’s important for us to foster a connection between the military and the public, and this exhibition plays a vital role in that.
Interviewer: You mentioned the large contingent present at the event. Can you elaborate on what that signifies for the army’s readiness and capabilities?
Minister Tanner: Absolutely. The presence of such a large number of recruits and the advanced technology on display underlines our commitment to national defense and security. We want to assure the citizens of Austria that we are well-prepared and equipped to handle any challenges that may arise.
Interviewer: On a personal note, you mentioned this is your “dream job.” What are your aspirations, especially regarding your role as Defense Minister in the future?
Minister Tanner: This position allows me to serve my country in a meaningful way. I would love to continue in this role, but obviously, much depends on the upcoming election and the composition of the next government. Regardless of the future, I am determined to continue advocating for our armed forces and the safety of our citizens.
Interviewer: Thank you for your insights, Minister Tanner. We look forward to the exhibition and wish you the best in your role!
Minister Tanner: Thank you very much! I encourage everyone to come out and experience the exhibition—it’s a chance to see our armed forces in action and to celebrate our national pride.
Inauguration of new recruits. Can you elaborate on why this is significant?
Minister Tanner: Certainly! The induction of 1,200 new recruits is a significant milestone for our Armed Forces. It not only represents our commitment to national defense but also reflects the trust the youth of Austria have in serving their country. This generation brings fresh perspectives and skills that are essential for the modern challenges we face today.
Interviewer: The exhibition will also feature a tank column and various military vehicles. How important is it for the public to see this hardware in action?
Minister Tanner: It’s incredibly important! By showcasing our military hardware in a public demonstration, we aim to instill confidence in our defense capabilities. It also provides an opportunity for citizens to engage with the military and gain a better understanding of the role we play in ensuring national security. Seeing the equipment up close emphasizes the professionalism and technological advancements within our Armed Forces.
Interviewer: Alongside the event in Vienna, there will also be activities in Salzburg featuring around 700 new soldiers. Can you highlight the importance of these simultaneous events?
Minister Tanner: Absolutely! By holding events in multiple locations, we’re able to reach a broader audience. The swearing-in ceremony in Salzburg and the combat demonstration provide local communities with a chance to connect with the military. It’s about fostering a spirit of unity and appreciation for those who serve our nation, no matter where they are.
Interviewer: Lastly, as you mentioned, you consider this role your “dream job.” What are your aspirations for the Army as you look to the future?
Minister Tanner: My aspiration is to ensure that the Austrian Armed Forces remain a modern, capable, and respected institution. This includes investing in personnel, embracing innovation, and maintaining open lines of communication with the public. Ultimately, I hope to create a defense force that not only protects our nation but also inspires pride among all Austrians.
Interviewer: Thank you, Minister Tanner, for sharing your insights with us today. We wish you a successful National Holiday event!
Minister Tanner: Thank you! I look forward to celebrating with everyone on this special day.
