National Cybersecurity Council created

The Venezuelan government announced the creation of the National Cybersecurity Council, a new entity that will have specific powersfocused on a permanent surveillance network for telematic incidents.

It also focuses on the ability to request data, statistics and information related to computer security from individuals and public or private companies.

The institution was established by a presidential decree published in the Official Gazette No. 42,939, dated August 12. The council will have an advisory role in the creation of security policies and will be composed of representatives from various ministries of the executive cabinet.

The members of the Council will include the Executive Vice President of the Republic and the Ministries of Defense, Science and Technology, Economy, Finance and Foreign Trade, Foreign Affairs, Internal Relations, Justice and Peace, Planning and National Commerce, according to the decree.

Therefore, The State is required to develop security, administration and control policies for access and use, points to the text.

The Venezuelan government has accused “big tech magnates and companies use information and communications technologies” as tools for “transnational organized crime, cyberterrorism and political destabilization.”

Similarly, the decree warns that the current risks arising from the improper use of information and communication technologies represent “a great danger to the preservation of peace, stability and security of the nation, which requires a greater effort to fulfill the responsibilities of the State.”
