The National Council has a colorful bouquet of topics to deal with in its upcoming plenary week, which will consist of only one session. The corona pandemic will be ended more or less definitively, the cost-of-living aid for socially disadvantaged families will be fixed, the new parent-child pass will be introduced and the rules for the climate bonus will be adjusted. Should anyone feel like an “urgent request”, the FPÖ would be the first to act on the part of the opposition.

A new face might be seen in the front row on Wednesday. Because Pamela Rendi-Wagner is not only withdrawing from the party chairmanship, but also from the club management of the SPÖ. The successor should be clarified at a club general meeting on Tuesday. There are plenty of candidates for this, such as women’s boss Eva Maria Holzleitner, finance spokesman Jan Krainer, health spokesman Philip Kucher or environmental spokeswoman Julia Herr. Rendi-Wagner will remain as a simple member of the National Council until the end of the month, following which her mandate will probably go to ex-State Secretary Muna Duzdar.

The National Council is essentially saying goodbye to the corona crisis. In future, Covid-19 is to be treated legally like all non-notifiable infectious diseases and thus be transferred from the pandemic to the regular system. It can only be tested free of charge if there is a suspicion of corona. However, funds will be made available to carry out two million vaccinations free of charge.

There is also an innovation for pharmacies from the healthcare sector. You will be able to establish pick-up compartments or pick-up stations for depositing over-the-counter medicines for customers.

The mother-child pass will be put on a new footing next year, starting with the new name parent-child pass. It is fixed that more services will be offered, but some things remain open in the parliamentary decision, as a regulation is still needed for details. Among other things, an additional hearing screening for newborns and a further voluntary midwife consultation are planned. It has already been decided that the passport will be digitized.

The session begins with health. The Greens have selected the topic “Healthy together: Measures for better health care” for the “Current Hour”.

The cost-of-living aid for families with children at risk of poverty will be expanded. The grants for social welfare households had already been decided in the last plenary week, and other target groups are now to follow. Specifically, these are recipients of unemployment benefit and emergency assistance, minimum pensioners as well as single parents and sole earners with a monthly gross income of less than 2,000 euros. The special payment of 60 euros per month will be granted between July of this year and December 2024, in each case for children under the age of 18.

With the climate bonus, following the first extraordinary (high) payment, you return to the mode that was actually set. A basic amount of 110 euros and the locally graded regional compensation are used. From 2024, the much-discussed regional bonus for convicts will be abolished.

There are also a few smaller things. On the occasion of its 50th anniversary, the “Light in the Dark” aid campaign received a special donation of 14.4 million. Furthermore, cost overruns for the conversion of parliament are budgeted for.
