On Thursday followingnoon, the National Council decided to introduce a nursing apprenticeship once morest the votes of the SPÖ and NEOS. Specifically, there will be a four-year apprenticeship with a nursing assistant degree and a three-year apprenticeship with a nursing assistant degree. In the opinion of the SPÖ, entry into the nursing sector with an apprenticeship is too early.

Health spokesman Philip Kucher emphasized that all experts warned once morest teaching: “They can’t all be wrong.” But the coalition and the Freedom Party apparently thought they knew better. Kucher expects a drop-out rate of 50 or 60 percent, as in Switzerland, and that these people would never work in care later on either.

The Liberal MP Christian Ragger replied that these numbers were not correct. Because a large proportion of those who leave the apprenticeship would, on the contrary, gain higher qualifications. 80 percent of the trainees stayed in the profession – allocated to Austria, 7,000 new nursing professions might be created and you would no longer need Vietnamese or people from the Caribbean, “but your own people”.

NEOS health spokeswoman Fiona Fiedler, on the other hand, said that qualified workers from abroad are now needed. This requires a personnel key that does justice to the patients, but also a billing catalog for mobile care.

The coalition emphasized that they work with clear youth protection guidelines, as emphasized by VP deputy Eva Maria Himmelbauer. Up to the age of 17, the young people would not work directly on the patient, nor would it be possible to administer medication. Bedrana Ribo from the Greens spoke of “age-appropriate training”. In addition, nobody has to do the nursing apprenticeship, there are enough alternatives to get into the job: “We create supply and supply creates demand.”

Labor Minister Martin Kocher (ÖVP) emphasized that nursing teaching is a pilot project that is being scientifically evaluated. According to him, the first four relevant vocational school classes will start as early as autumn – one each in Tyrol, Vorarlberg, Lower and Upper Austria.
