The board of directors of the Ciudad Guayana section of the National College of Journalists (CNP) handed out cards to six new members.
The award ceremony was held at the headquarters of Nueva Prensa de Guayana, in Puerto Ordaz, where other issues of interest to the union were also discussed.
Javier Samuel Paredes, general secretary of the branch together with Bladimir Martínez, organization secretary; Gustavo Montaña, president of the Disciplinary Court; and Félix Requena, journalist; They urged the union members to “defend the profession.”
They also made a call for all those graduate journalists who have not yet registered to do so.
In this sense, they recalled that article 2 of the Law on the Practice of Journalism establishes that “To practice the profession of journalist, it is required to have a degree in Social Communication, Journalism or equivalent, issued in the country by a university or legally revalidated title; and be registered in the National College of Journalists (CNP) and in the Journalist Social Welfare Institute (IPSP). Citizens who meet the requirements established in this provision, will be the only ones authorized to use the title of professional journalist.
Regarding the latter, Secretary General Javier Samuel Paredes emphasized that the CNP is working to bring cases of citizens who usurp the journalist’s functions before the authorities.
He even recalled that recently the board of directors went to the Public Ministry and the Criminal, Scientific, Criminal and Criminal Investigation Corps (Cicpc) to denounce these facts.
For his part, Bladimir Martínez, stated that it is also the journalist’s responsibility to enforce the profession.
He noted that it can lead to sanctions for communication professionals who observe an irregular situation that violates the legal exercise and do not report it.
While Félix Requena, on behalf of the union members, urged the board to take more forceful actions, taking into account the “attacks” on social networks that have arisen in recent days.
They will form an electoral commission
Paredes mentioned that in the coming days there will be assemblies for the formation of the Electoral Commission to elect a new board.
Paredes pointed out that since 2012 union elections have not been held, since the National Electoral Council (CNE) has not allowed it.
In the case of Ciudad Guayana, he specified that after a consensus during an assembly that was held in 2019, he was elected as secretary general, while the elections are held.

On the other hand, the Secretary General announced that the National Games for Journalists are scheduled to be held next September.
He added that the sporting events will be held in the city of Maracay.
