▲ National Association of Metropolitan and Provincial Medical Associations: Yonhap News The National Association of Metropolitan and Provincial Medical Associations announced its stance that it would be willing to go on a general strike with medical residents in relation to the government’s move to force an increase in the number of medical school students.
The council issued a statement on the 3rd and criticized, “If medical policies are advanced without the opinions of the Korean Medical Association, the highest expert group, it is obvious that the result will directly lead to damage to the lives of all citizens.”
It is claimed that the government is not properly recognizing the Korean Medical Association as a dialogue partner during recent discussions on increasing the number of medical school seats.
The government and the Korea Medical Association have held consultations on medical issues 27 times over the past year from January last year, but neither side has been able to reach a satisfactory conclusion.
The council said, “Even now, the government must properly and fully discuss essential medical measures with the Korean Medical Association at the Medical Issues Council,” and emphasized that it would go on a general strike if the government pushes ahead with its policies in the current state.
Meanwhile, the day before, on the 2nd, the Korean Medical Residents Association (Daejeon Association) held an emergency representative meeting online to discuss response plans when the government announced the size of the increase in medical schools.
The Daejeon Association also revealed the results of a survey of residents last month showing that 86% expressed their intention to take collective action when increasing the number of medical school students.
