The final audit of the 21st National Assembly will run from the 10th to the 27th. As both the ruling and opposition parties are in a life-or-death situation in a head-to-head battle over the leadership of the general election in April next year, concerns regarding a ‘politically-motivated National Assembly inspection’ are growing, and the old attitude of some lawmakers who use the National Assembly inspection to show off their political presence ahead of the general election is also considered a ‘caution.’

The People Power Party, which has set ‘People’s Livelihood Inspection, Responsible Administration, and Hopeful Administration’ as its three main principles, plans to “keep its distance from the Democratic Party of Korea’s attempts at political strife.” Senior Vice President Lee Yang-soo said in a phone call on the 9th, “We will normalize the government audit function that monitors the executive branch and public institutions,” and added, “We will boldly block the opposition party’s groundless fake news and attempts at political warfare ahead of the general election.” The People Power Party plans to fully address issues from the former Moon Jae-in administration, such as allegations of ‘statistical manipulation’, at the standing committee as they are still ongoing.

The Democratic Party plans to hold a national audit in line with the Yoon Seok-yeol government’s demand for a change in national administration policy and personnel reform. Senior vice floor leader Park Joo-min said in a phone call, “We will carefully examine the Yoon Seok-yeol government’s disappearance from politics and neglect of the people’s livelihood.” In particular, the Democratic Party’s floor leadership will discuss the allegations of external pressure in the investigation of Corporal Chae, which must be handled jointly by the Public Administration and Security, National Defense, Legislation and Judiciary, and Steering Committees, and the discharge of contaminated water from Japan’s Fukushima nuclear power plant, which must be investigated by the Agriculture, Food, Rural Affairs, Oceans and Fisheries, Foreign Affairs, and Environment and Labor Committees. As with last year’s National Assembly inspection, ‘Lee Jae-myung risk’ and ‘Kim Geon-hee risk’ are also major attack points. The People Power Party plans to once once more raise issues such as ‘Kim Man-bae’s false interview election manipulation’ centered on the Legislative and Judiciary Committee, and the Democratic Party plans to once once more raise the suspicion of preferential treatment for the Seoul-Yangpyeong Expressway and issues related to Mrs. Kim at the Land, Infrastructure and Transport Committee.

Minister of National Defense Shin Won-sik and Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Yoo In-chon, who were appointed on the 7th, will make their National Assembly debut. Minister Shin was appointed without the adoption of the personnel hearing report, and as the opposition party expressed the opinion that Minister Yoo is ‘unqualified’, it is expected that a ‘second round of hearing’ will unfold.
