Bulgaria’s National Assembly: The Comedy of Errors Continues!
Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, gather ’round because the circus has rolled back into town! The 51st National Assembly has failed spectacularly for the sixth time in its mission to elect a Speaker. Yes, you heard it right. Six times! At this point, I half expect to see a clown popping out of the ballot box! 🎪
It seems that the coalition of MPs from the PP-DB group decided that Silvi Kirilov was not, in fact, the chosen one. They abstained from voting for him, proving once again that unity in politics is about as common as a unicorn…and just as useful too!
Meet the Candidates: The Comedy Line-Up!
Now, let’s talk about the lineup because if this were a comedy show, there’d be no shortage of acts. The GERB-SDS crowd is going with the ever-familiar Raya Nazaryan, still trying to plug in her good old USB to success, while ¨Vazrazhdane” has brought forward none other than Adv. Petar Petrov. That’s right; it’s the ‘best of’ compilation of the past! Who says creativity is dead in Bulgarian politics?
And let’s not forget the BSP-United Left, putting forth Assoc. Nataliya Kiselova, and “There is such a people” (ITN), showcasing the grandad of the assembly, Dr. Silvi Kirilov, who, at this rate, is probably pondering an escape plan involving some cleverly concealed gardening tools!
The Votes Keep Coming… or Not!
Voting winds down, and it’s about as suspenseful as watching paint dry. Spoiler alert: Raya Nazaryan and Silvi Kirilov are headed to the runoff. I’m on the edge of my seat! Anyone got a cushion? It could be a long wait again!
After yet another failure, Silvi decided it was time for a well-deserved 60-minute coffee break. Who wouldn’t need one after an hour of pretending to care? I mean, even the MPs can’t imagine more of this, right? It’s practically like watching a soap opera but with less drama and more shouting!
Introducing Politics 101: Scandals and Accusations!
In a plot twist worthy of a daytime TV show, Yavor Bozhankov from PP-DB couldn’t help himself from comparing Kirilov to someone embroiled in a scandal that has as many layers as an onion. Yes, folks, he questioned Kirilov’s ethics—while bringing up the notorious “Barcelonagate” scandal involving Miss Bikini and the leader of GERB. Talk about a mixtape of political intrigue!
“My mission is a dialogue for the effective work of the National Assembly, as well as an open and honest dialogue with each and every representative of the people,” declared Kirilov.
And right after Kirilov’s moment of glory, up pops Borislav Gutsanov giving yet another impromptu request for a break. Meanwhile, Bozhidar Bojanov from “Yes, Bulgaria” decided to step up with a bombshell: they aren’t voting at all in the runoff. That’s right, folks, it’s like showing up to a mandatory party and announcing that you’ve decided to go home! 🎉
The Curtain Falls… or Does It?
So, here we are, folks. Stay tuned for the next episode of “As The National Assembly Turns.” If the political atmosphere were a perfume, it would smell like confusion with a hint of desperation. Will they ever elect a Speaker? Will Silvi Kirilov lay down the law without stepping on toes? Will someone finally buy the MPs a calendar so they can keep track of these elections? All this, and more, coming soon!

The 51st National Assembly, amidst growing tensions, has once again failed to elect a Speaker, marking the sixth unsuccessful attempt. Notably, a portion of the MPs from the ruling coalition PP-DB chose to abstain from supporting the candidacy of Dr. Silvi Kirilov, stirring controversy among party lines.
The four political formations vying for leadership have repeatedly presented the same candidates for the chairmanship, demonstrating a lack of consensus. This cycle of nominations saw GERB-SDS presenting Raya Nazaryan, the Speaker of the previous assembly. “Vazrazhdane” nominated Adv. Petar Petrov, while the “BSP-United Left” endorsed Assoc. Nataliya Kiselova. “There is such a people” (ITN) put forward Dr. Silvi Kirilov, who is the most senior member of the assembly and is currently overseeing the plenary sessions.
Raya Nazaryan and Silvi Kirilov have emerged as the leading candidates heading into the runoff, indicating a potential shift in the dynamics of the assembly leadership.
Following the latest voting failure, Silvi Kirilov called for a 60-minute recess to allow discussions among the MPs.
Before the vote commenced, Yavor Bozhankov from PP-DB raised eyebrows by alluding to a controversial connection between Silvi Kirilov and the alleged ‘fictitious father’ of the child belonging to Miss Bikini, Borislava Yovcheva, linked to the infamous “Barcelonagate” scandal surrounding GERB leader Boyko Borisov. This remark served to heighten tensions within the assembly.
When the session resumed, Kirilov reaffirmed her commitment to principles of constitutional adherence, morality, and the rich traditions of the Bulgarian people. In her address, she stated, “My mission is a dialogue for the effective work of the National Assembly, as well as an open and honest dialogue with each and every representative of the people,” emphasizing her reliance on the cooperation of her fellow deputies.
However, following Kirilov’s declaration, Borislav Gutsanov requested a 30-minute recess. During this interval, Bozhidar Bojanov from “Yes, Bulgaria” signaled that their faction within the PP-DB group would abstain from voting in the runoff, further complicating the assembly’s dynamics.
