Islamabad: The National Assembly is dissolved in Pakistan. The announcement was made by Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif. Shahbaz Sharif announced that the National Assembly will be dissolved on August 9. The Sheriff will convey the official advice to the President. According to constitutional provisions, the President must sign the advisory within 48 hours to implement the dissolution. If, for any reason, the President does not sign the advice, the Assembly is automatically declared dissolved.
Prime Minister Shehbaz assured that the name of the interim prime minister would be submitted to the President following three days of consultation with the opposition. If no agreement is reached with the President on the matter, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) will step in and nominate a candidate from among the proposed names for the post of interim prime minister.
The announcement came following a dinner with parliamentary leaders to discuss the political situation in the country. Seeking the opinion of the parliamentary leaders on the issue, Prime Minister Shehbaz discussed the arrangements for the interim prime minister and the guard setup.
Last month, Prime Minister Shehbaz formed a five-member committee within the Pakistan Muslim League (N) or PMNL party to engage in discussions on the appointment of an interim prime minister and dissolution of the National Assembly, The News reported.
While the provincial assemblies of Sindh and Balochistan are scheduled to be dissolved next week along with the National Assembly, it is noteworthy that the committee has only members from the Punjab region.
