Happy National Agriculture Day! Although Agriculture Day occurs every day, we officially celebrate National Agriculture Day 2024 on Tuesday, March 19. Agriculture is important every day of the year, but National Agriculture Day is an opportunity to share all the amazing things agriculture does. If agriculture literally puts food on the table, it contributes even more to our daily lives.

Here’s why agriculture matters, on National Agriculture Day and every day.

Agriculture provides us with food, fiber, wood, beverages, fuel, and almost every item we use every day. It has a considerable impact on the quality of life since it provides us with medicines, clothing, tires and many other everyday items. Almost everything we eat, wear, and use comes from a plant or animal.

Agriculture also plays an important role in sustainable development. By-products are one of the ways agriculture plays this role. Agricultural byproducts are a great way to reduce waste and recycle products that would otherwise go to waste. The by-products are used for animal feed, cosmetics, medicines and medical equipment, fertilizers and much more. Leather is even a by-product.

Agriculture is also at the forefront of reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the United States. Agriculture represents 10% of GHG emissions, which is a minimal collateral effect for a sector that does so much. Agriculture is improving sustainability by using new technologies and sustainable practices such as reduced tillage, cover crops and biogas digesters. Agriculture does such a good job of reducing greenhouse gas emissions that other industries buy the carbon credits generated by it.

In addition to producing our food and many items we use every day, American agriculture also has a huge impact on the economy. According to the 2023 “Feeding the Economy” report, U.S. agriculture accounted for 46,283,917 jobs (nearly 35% of U.S. jobs) worth a total of $2.61 trillion. wages. The agricultural industry as a whole has an economic impact of $8.6 trillion. In 2022, agriculture accounted for 5.5% of U.S. GDP. Learn about the latest economic impact of agriculture in the 2024 “Feeding the Economy” report, which is released each year on National Agriculture Day. Without agriculture, the American economy would be radically different. Globally, American agriculture also plays an important role. In 2023, total agricultural exports were valued at $178.7 billion. Around 20% of our annual agricultural production is exported.

Agriculture is not just about activities on farms. National Agriculture Day is special because it honors all those who work in agriculture. Some people work outdoors, on a farm or ranch, while others work in an office or laboratory. Agriculture is everything: social media, economics, technology, research, mechanics, sales, science, nutrition, engineering, education and much more. On the occasion of National Agriculture Day, don’t forget to give a special thanks to the people who work in agriculture and who are not always recognized.

One of the most interesting aspects of agriculture isn’t even what it does for the world, but the people who practice it. It takes so many dedicated people to produce our food, improve science and technology, tell the story of agriculture, and so much more. If you spend any time with people working in agriculture, it’s easy to see how much they love their job. They also understand the importance of the impact they can have on the world. On this National Agriculture Day, we thank agricultural workers across the country who spare no effort. It’s because of you that there is food on the table.

National Agriculture Day is a great opportunity to start a conversation. If you work in agriculture, post on social media about what you do, or if you’re in a grocery store, offer to answer someone’s questions. If you don’t have a lot of farming experience, reach out to someone who works in this field, chances are they’ll be happy to talk with you. Every day is a good day to connect with someone from the agricultural world or to share your experience in this field, but National Agriculture Day is an opportunity to go the extra mile. AGDAILY is one of many sponsors of National Ag Day.

National Agriculture Day events include virtual and in-person meetings in Washington throughout the day, as well as an Agri-Pulse-hosted event, the 2024 Ag & Food Policy Summit: Revitalizing Rural Revenues of Agriculture and Food Policy 2024: Revitalizing Rural Incomes), which will explore topics such as local food systems, biomanufacturing, environmental markets and the potential for increased demand overseas.

It is because of agriculture that we have food on our tables, clothes to wear, houses to live in, and countless items that we use. Don’t forget to thank the dedicated, hardworking and incredible people who are a part of this industry, not only on National Agriculture Day, but every day.
