2 US astronauts who will be going into space on an 8-day mission in June 2024 are still stuck in the International Space Station (ISS).
According to the American space agency NASA, if the Boeing Star Lines cannot be repaired, the two astronauts will be able to return to Earth only in 2025.
These two astronauts reached the ISS on the first manned flight of Boeing’s Starliner spacecraft, but they are still stranded two months later.
Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore will return in February 2025 via SpaceX’s Crew Dragon if the Starliner fails to recover, NASA officials said.
NASA has been in talks with SpaceX to keep 2 seats vacant on the Crew Dragon mission, but the mission has already been delayed by a month.
Butch Wilmore and Sunita Williams arrived at the ISS on June 5 on Boeing’s Starliner test mission and were said at the time to return on June 13.
But then due to problems in the Starliner’s propulsion system, questions started to arise regarding the safe return of the spacecraft to Earth.
If both astronauts are returned by SpaceX, it will be a huge blow to Boeing’s Starliner mission.
The Starliner is currently in the ISS where astronauts are to be transported by the new Crew Dragon mission.
The SpaceX mission was scheduled to launch in mid-August, but will now be sent after September 24.
Boeing said in a statement in July that various problems had been identified with the Starliner, while the company said in a statement on August 2 that it was confident of the return of the crew via the Starliner.
But NASA has raised concerns about the Starliner’s ability to safely return to Earth with humans.
