The American space agency NASA announced on Thursday that it was in the process of creating a unit responsible for studying unidentified aerial phenomena.
The new independent unit will start its activities in early fall, to examine events that cannot be identified as aircraft or known natural phenomena.
“The study will focus on identifying what data is available, how best to collect future data, and how NASA can use this data to advance the scientific understanding of unidentified aerial phenomena,” he said. agency in a press release.
She specified that the unidentified phenomena present in the atmosphere are of interest for national security and aviation safety.
“NASA believes that the instruments of scientific discovery are good and can be applied in this field as well,” said Thomas Zurbuchen, deputy director of science, at NASA Headquarters in Washington.
“We have access to a wide range of Earth observations from space – and that is the lifeblood of scientific research. We have the instruments and the team that can help us improve our understanding of Earth. ‘unknown. That’s the very definition of science. That’s what we do,” he added.
According to the agency, there is no evidence that the unidentified aerial phenomena are of extraterrestrial origin.
The study group will be led by astrophysicist David Spergel, president of the Simons Foundation in New York and former chair of the department of astrophysics at Princeton University.
