Living on the planet Mars is not yet possible but NASA is working on it. It has just launched its second Crew Health and Performance Exploration Analog (CHAPEA 2) experiment, which is due to begin in 2025. Four volunteers are sought, indicates NASA in a press release published this Friday.
Simulates the challenges of a mission to Mars
The latter must be available for a year to live in the Mars Dune Alpha habitat, located at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston (Texas). They will operate in premises of 157 m², created using 3D printing. A sandy area of around a hundred square meters was also created to simulate spacewalks.
In addition to these mock simulations, the astronaut candidates will perform robotic operations, carry out habitat maintenance, and try their hand at exercising and growing crops. The habitat will simulate the challenges of a mission to Mars, including resource limitations, equipment failures, communications delays and other environmental stressors.

Several conditions to respect
But be careful, not everyone can participate. NASA is seeking U.S. citizens or permanent residents between the ages of 30 and 55 who are fluent in English and have a university degree in a scientific field. In addition, you will need to have a minimum of two years of professional experience, around a hundred hours of flight time on an aircraft or two years of work in a scientific doctoral program.
Applications can be submitted until April 2, 2024. Start of the mission: spring 2025. This is paid, although the amount has not been revealed by NASA. A first CHAPEA experiment is underway and is more than halfway complete. A third is planned in the coming years.
