The American Space Agency (NASA) announced that it had recently launched a spacecraft that carries the necessary equipment to proceed with the update of the first quantum physics laboratory in space “Cold Atom Lab”, under the direction of the Moroccan scientist Kamal Oudrhiri.

The size of a small refrigerator, the laboratory, installed on the International Space Station, has the capacity to cool atoms down to near absolute zero. It enables dozens of scientists on Earth to conduct quantum physics experiments and study the fundamental behaviors of the atoms and particles that make up the world around us. “We hope that Cold Atom Lab will mark the beginning of an era where quantum tools will be used regularly in space,” said Kamal Oudrhiri, project manager for Cold Atom Lab, quoted in a NASA press release.

“Thanks to Cold Atom Lab, we have shown that these delicate quantum tools are reliable and even scalable in space. We hope Cold Atom Lab will be just the first of many quantum space missions to come,” added the Moroccan scientist.
