When we thought that there was nothing brighter than the Sun, this new advance in science arrives, bringing us something really impressive, it is regarding the Ultra Luminous X-Ray Sources, or ULX being its abbreviation.
This term, astronomically speaking, refers to an X-ray source, which is the most luminous they have found so far. Normally, they are found in the nuclei of a galaxy, however, this one is not. An interesting note is that our galaxy does not have any sources.
Then you will ask yourself, why if it is not in our galaxy is it important? The answer is, this ultra-luminous source is very powerful, so much so that it exceeds the Eddington limit, the latter being what determines how big an object is according to its luminosity, now, having mentioned this, do you have an idea what what does it mean?
A little more than 100 million light years from our planet, in the Messier 82 galaxy, this ULX was located. These objects belong to neutron stars, like remnants of massive stars that had been exposed to explosions.
Why do we say the above? The answer is that scientists had the idea that ULXs were black holes, with glowing gas around them, but this was left behind when what spewed from the NuSTAR He made them see that this object was much less massive, calling it a “neutron star.” The only thing they had in common is their formation, since both are born from the death and collapse of a star.
These exotic objects of the cosmos are so powerful that their energy exceeds the energy of the sun by millions, creating such a great impression on scientists. A study was carried out in which the measurement of Ultralight Sources was obtained, for which special NASA telescopes were used, the same study that was published in The Astrophysical Journal.
The result of this only confirms what was suspected, the ULX exceeds the Eddington limit, and the name they gave to this excessively bright object is M82X – 2. Fiona Harrison, one of the researchers, mentioned that this ULX “It has all the power of a black hole, but with much less mass.”
This investigation will not end here, since among the plans of the astronomers is to maintain the observation to monitor the ULX, and to understand many things that are still unknown, and they will do this hand in hand with NuSTAR, Swift and Chandra, belonging to to the NASA.
We hope soon to be receiving more information regarding such an object, since we are so intrigued to know everything in detail, in order to continue acquiring knowledge of the Universe and everything that it entails, although we will probably never finish knowing it, since it is constantly expanding, so surely there are many more things that we need to know.
