It was a matter of time before we heard the first ideas and developments on artificial intelligence in space missions, and that even with AIs as the enemies to destroy in many of the best films in the history of the science fiction genre. NASA is now developing a kind of ChatGPT-like assistant for astronauts.

Why all cats are so similar to each other and dogs are not

The underlying idea is that this trained assistant allows astronauts to perform maneuvers, experiments and more using a natural language ChatGPT-like interface. According to has explained researcher Larissa Suzuki:

The idea is to get to a point where we have conversational interactions with spacecraft and they also get back to us regarding alerts, interesting finds they see in the solar system and beyond. It really isn’t like science fiction anymore.

When the development of this assistant is developed, its location will be the Lunar Gateway, a space station that will orbit the Moon and support NASA’s Artemis mission. The researchers say it would use “a natural language interface that allows astronauts to seek advice on experiments or perform maneuvers without diving into complex manuals.”

In fact, there is a full page dedicated to the project where NASA requests support and aid for Lunar Gateway. The agency details that it would require artificial intelligence and machine learning technologies to manage various systems when not in operation, such as autonomous operations of scientific payloads, data transmission prioritization, autonomous operations, Gateway health management.

In short, providing future space missions with the help of these algorithms that make life in space more bearable for astronauts.
