Weightlifter Naryury Pérez gave the seventh and final Olympic diploma to the Venezuelan delegation at the Paris 2024 Games on Sunday, an event from which the national team left without winning any medals, something that had not happened since Sydney 2000.
Pérez, a 33-year-old from Yaracuy, competed in the +81 kilogram (kg) category of the female branch and took eighth place.
The weightlifting competition took place at the Paris Sur Arena, where the athlete from San Felipe lifted 114 kilos in the snatch and another 145 in the clean and jerk, for a total of 259 kg.
Li, queen of division
The queen of the +81 kg women’s division was China’s Wenwen Li, who lifted 136 kg in the snatch and 173 in the clean and jerk, for a total of 309 kg. She did not set any records at the event, but she did take home the coveted gold medal.
The silver medal went to South Korea’s Hyejeong Park, who lifted 131 kg in the snatch and 168 kg in the clean and jerk, to finish with a mark of 299 kg.
The podium was completed by the British Emily Campbell, who achieved 126 kg in the snatch and 162 kg in the clean and jerk, to finish with a total of 288 kg.
Venezuelan Diplomas
Of the seven certifications – endorsed by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) – that Venezuela achieved on French soil, three were obtained by weightlifters. Apart from Pérez, Anyelin Venegas and Keydomar Vallenilla also did so.
The men’s epee team, made up of Francisco, Rubén and Jesús Limardo, as well as Grabiel Lugo, received recognition in fencing.
In wrestling, that privilege was held by Raiber Rodríguez, a specialist in the Greco-Roman style, while in athletics Rosa Rodríguez, who is a veteran of the hammer throw, brought home a distinction, something that Yohandri Granado also did in tae kwon do.
