After deciding to start a hotel business, the general practice is to build large rooms to ensure maximum comfort for the arriving guests. The higher the size and amenities of the rooms, the more affordable the rent will be. But a micro hotel in Indonesia is grabbing the world’s attention with narrow rooms that are only nine feet wide. Located in Salatiga, Central Java, this hotel, Pitrooms, also holds the record for the ‘world’s slimmest hotel’.
This is the dream project of architect Eri Indra, a native of Salatiga. But he says that the building was not built with the aim of setting a world record.
His only thought was that his hometown should get international attention. After working in Jakarta and Singapore, Eri decided to use his skills in construction to do something for his hometown. While walking around looking for what might be done, he found a place that was not being used by anyone due to space limitations. His idea is to build a hotel that offers a unique experience in a small space. Thus a separate construction was started.
Piturums means seven rooms in Javanese language. As the name suggests, the hotel has seven rooms. Each measures only 2.8 meters (9 feet). The rooms are built on five floors. The rooms are equipped with a double bed and a small bathroom with shower and toilet. Despite being the same size, each room has a different feel.
Large windows are included in each room to enjoy beautiful views of the nearby mountain ranges. Sand stone is used to prepare the facade of the building. The total height of the building is 17 meters. The top floor has a restaurant and bar. Pitrooms start at £50 (Rs 5250) per night. The hotel was opened in December 2022.
